Out of the Box is not your typical music course. It deals with creativity and imagination. It is about approaching music from different angles, looking at possibilities to stretch boundaries, expanding the vocabulary, finding ways to make your art meaningful – through discussion, musical demonstrations, connections with other art forms, talks with inspiring guests, and more. I will provide content that you can work and experiment with, and I will engage with you in musical performances and exercises related to sound and improvisation. We will watch videos, listen to songs together and discuss them. I will recommend books and movies. I will inform, share, and hopefully inspire.
Interview (in Spanish) with Rolling Stone Mexico, about the latest edition of Out of the Box (2020):
Important: these are not lessons about learning music, as in learning scales, harmony, or how to play your instrument. There are several other workshops focusing on academic training – they are great. If that is specifically what you are looking for, then Out of the Box will not meet your expectations. My friend, bassist Fabio Testa (bass coach and founder of the Italian Bass Community), who is a terrific teacher, understood that concept very well, and sums it all up in the following promo video:
The question is: why am I doing this?
I have had a pretty diverse career so far, that involved several, different activities – from session work, to production, writing, arranging, and live performances. Most of the time, I’m asked to be myself. What does that mean? There is no simple answer. It’s an ever-evolving path. It’s my constant motivation to develop an artistic vision that is personal and recognisable, that I can adjust to my creative needs and those of others.
Nowadays, it is important to discuss the role and meaning of music, more than ever; to discover our own identity as artists, and to channel our inner voice, in order to produce beautiful, unique art. It’s important to refuse mediocrity and to establish good values through research, curiosity and open-mindedness. The seminar will provide tools to nurture musical consciousness, that will ultimately serve your artistic vision.
