Hey, it’s been a while. Sorry, I didn’t mean to disappear. Life happens…
I have been focusing on my translation activity, mainly on video game localisation as of late. I had to learn a new way of approaching the work, get used to a new software, overcome daily challenges. It’s been an enriching experience for sure. Of course, my timing in choosing a career appears to be unfortunate, which is a constant – probably what I excel in best! Talk about AI/machine translation is spreading fast, and what currently seems to be a rudimental device might become incredibly accurate and “intelligent” in no time (I have been experiencing the gradual improvements, as I deal with machine translations almost daily). This implies a devaluing of my job expertise in favour of lower rates; agencies and clients are beginning to feed texts to the AI and subsequently submit the results to a translator, who’s only needed for some post-editing work at this point. Is it just post-editing, though?
That’s not the only issue with AI, anyway. I invite you to read the proposal at EGAIR (European Guild For Artificial Intelligence Regulation) and sign if you agree with the manifesto. I think it’s important to take action right now and regulate the way AI is being used, to prevent future damage and an unfair turn of events. I’m no anti-AI by any means: I really think it’s a wonderful tool with potential artistic significance and utility. But exploitation is not right.
On a lighter note – Julie, Alessandro and I have just released a video for “The World Beyond”, from our new record “Mount Si”. I hope you have been enjoying the album. Check it out, share it, show some love if you like.
More soon.
